I’m a 100% with you on your idea that if your mixes suck, great gear will not change that, at all. The preamp in your scarlett is perfectly fine. It is clean, transparent and allows the sound of your mic to shine through wonderfully. I would stick with that – unless you want a different “color” of preamp. I had the same issue with using an external mic pre and then going into my interface.

Definitely complements my mini firewire410. The Impedance is what impresses me the most. Have not seen this on any other hardware under $650. Tubes are great, the build is sturdy, impedance/LCfilter is blowing my mind. But the tubes themselves are incredible.
